about_
During this course we were asked to design a chair or tabel corresponding to the anaylisis project (japanese house) in the other course (modelstudies), focusing on connections, detail, material and concept. This resulted in a 1:3 scale-model of the designed chair.

The design of this chair is inspired by the Japanese house; Nojiri-Ko. Whereas the whole building folds around the orthogonal wood grid structure, likewise the design of the chair also keeps orthogonality but with a twist. This ideology results in the main oak beam where all other elements placed around it. Like how the columns in the building proceed from inside to nature outside, the oak beam is the only element that goes beyond the width of the other elements and thereby relates to the adjacent freespace. The beam is raised by the chair-legs, keeping contact with the floor minimal, comparable to how the columns raise the building above the terrain and create a subtle connection to surrounding nature. Using the main beam as a guiding and starting element, the other chair components are gradually added around by using clear and demountable connections, which relates to the sequacious building process of the house. By stacking the different elements together and tightening the steel rods as last elements, a stiff and harmonious entirety is established. To achieve a natural and pure feel with seamless details the chair is mainly made of wood corresponding to the house and traditional Japanese architecture. Some steel is used in the detailing, to establish a modern aspect to the traditional Japanese language. To add warmth and pleasantness, a felt cushion is added allowing for comfortable human contact, likewise the interior of the Japanese house creates a soft layer within the rigid and harmonious architecture.
